In a surprising turn of events, Apple has officially suspended sales of their latest Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches due to a patent issue related to the blood oxygen sensor found in some models. The unexpected move took effect on their website from December 21st, with retail stores starting from December 24th.

The impact of this decision goes beyond just new purchases. If you have an out-of-warranty Apple Watch that needs repair in the US after December 25, 2023, you may find yourself in a difficult situation. Apple is no longer able to import watches equipped with the necessary blood oxygen sensor for repair, complicating the process. Typically, Apple opts for complete watch replacements rather than fixing individual parts, and with space constraints, securing these replacements becomes a daunting task.

A memo reportedly circulated by Apple at various stores outlining restrictions on replacements for affected Apple Watches. Specifically, this includes Apple Watch Series 6 or later and Apple Watch Ultra or later if they are out of warranty. However, if your watch is still within the coverage period, whether it's the standard one-year warranty or under the extended AppleCare plan, replacement remains a viable option.

While the Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches are discontinued, Apple continues to offer the Apple Watch SE. Interested buyers can still find all models, including the Apple Watch SE, at major retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, as long as those stores are still in stock. Stay informed about these developments, especially if you are considering purchasing one of the affected models or if you have an out-of-warranty Apple Watch that may need future repairs.
