How Netflix Plans to Monetize Games and Redefine Entertainment
Netflix, the streaming giant that revolutionized the way we consume content, is now shifting its focus to revolutionizing gaming. Two years after Netflix introduced games as part of its subscription service, the company is debating how to turn its gaming venture into a profitable segment, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report.
By 2023, Netflix Games boasts an impressive collection of 86 games, with an additional 90 in the pipeline. This library includes popular third-party titles like the GTA Trilogy and exciting in-house creations like Oxenfree 2. Despite this strong lineup, Netflix has received a lukewarm response from its subscriber base. A year after the gaming feature launched, less than 1 percent of subscribers were actively playing games on Netflix, a statistic that has only marginally improved even with the continued expansion of the game library.

However, Netflix remains undeterred and committed to its gaming venture, having invested nearly $1 billion in building its gaming business. This includes strategic acquisitions of studios like Night School Studios and collaborations with prominent game developers.
To turn its gaming platform into a revenue-generating powerhouse, Netflix is considering various options. Those potential strategies include introducing in-app purchases, charging extra for certain games, or even including ads in the new Netflix ad-supported tier — a departure from the current ad-free model.
Beyond direct monetization, Netflix is looking for new ways to capture the gaming audience. Insider Code hints at experiments with TV gaming, using smartphones as controllers, while recent job listings show a lot of interest in cloud gaming.
While these strategies are currently under discussion, Netflix's immediate plans for the new year include launching several exciting games. Titles like Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, Sonic Mania Plus, Hedes, Game Dev Tycoon, a game based on the Rebel Moon movie, and a creation set in the Squid Game universe are set to entice gaming enthusiasts.
