TomTom, a leading location technology provider, has joined forces with Microsoft to unveil an AI-powered voice assistant designed for drivers. This innovative solution, embedded in the Microsoft Azure OpenAI service, is seamlessly integrated into TomTom's digital cockpit platform for vehicles and can also be integrated into other vehicle infotainment systems.

The solution is based on the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and allows drivers to control navigation, entertainment systems and more by voice

Users will experience hands-free interaction, using their voice to access entertainment, perform location searches, and command various vehicle systems. For example, drivers can easily request directions to specific destinations, discover stops along their route, or adjust onboard features such as temperature and radio settings without taking their eyes off the road.

The collaboration aims to use Microsoft's AI expertise, particularly within the Microsoft Cloud, together with TomTom's deep automotive knowledge to offer drivers and car manufacturers the latest AI tools. This integration promises to deliver a highly distinctive and unique cockpit experience while preserving each manufacturer's individual brand identity.

This collaboration builds on the long-standing partnership between TomTom and Microsoft, which dates back to 2016 when TomTom powered Azure Maps location services.

Mike Schoofs, Chief Revenue Officer at TomTom, highlighted the shared vision of driving innovation with generative AI to provide better solutions for customers. By combining navigation and technology expertise, both companies are revolutionizing the automotive experience. The goal is to empower drivers to easily interact with their vehicles, where a simple voice command can connect them to countless functions, strengthening their confidence in the vehicle's capabilities.
